Editing Data with Cartographica

Cartographica is great at importing data from many formats, but it also has sophisticated features for editing existing data.

Table Editing

Most GIS data has geospatial information in the form of features (points, lines, and polygons) and non-geospatial data, which may consist of just about anything you can imagine: place names, number of crimes in an area, type of pavement on road. Editing most of this data is very straighforward as it is done directly in the data table below the main Map in the Map Window. Once you have a layer selected, click on the individual cell of data and start typing.

Cartographica allows you to add and remove columns using the Add Column and Remove column items in the Layer menu or by using the + and - buttons in the Layer Info panel.

Column order, size, and sorting in the Data View are remembered but not used in data processing.

Restrictions on table data: For now, Cartographica limits table data to what can be contained in standard GIS formats, which means that they are limited to small strings and numeric data.

Precision Editing

Occasionally, geospatial data needs to be corrected by changing coordinates to be more accurate. Cartographica has the ability to change any existing point in any feature using the Point Data window from the Window menu. Whenever that window is up, it shows the currently selected feature's data. To change a point, just click on the coordinate and change it. If you need to add or remove a point, select the line containing the point and use the + and - buttons to add or remove it. Of course, undo is avialable to undo whatever changes you have made.

Geospatial data is editing in the selected layer's coordinate system. Before the changes are applied, they are automatically projected into the Map's coordinate system, which can be confusing if you type a latitude or longitude in a layer that is mode up of feet or meters from a reference point.

Manual Editing

In some cases, you need to add geospatial data to a layer without the precision that you use in other applications. Cartographica supports manual editing (and creation) of features in new and existing layers in order to facilitate this.

Feature editing is done in Edit Mode, where your changes are only temporary until you commit them. In edit mode, all of the layers (including the one containing the feature you are editing are "ghosted" behind the editing area so that you can still make out where in the coordinate space you are, but those features don't interfere with your navigation.

When in edit mode, all navigational and zooming features are still available, so feel free to do things like Zoom To Feature or pan around in order to make your working canvas as appropriate as possible.

Individual points in features are shown using red dots. When these points are selected, the dots become hollow (have a white circle inside of them) to mark the selection. New points are inserted next to the currently selected point by holding down the Option key and clicking.
